On Monday, July 16, 2018, Chef’d meal kit service ceased operations. Its founder and CEO Kyle Ransford cited unexpected circumstances with funding for the business. Keeping in mind the popularity of the service, the news came as a big surprise.
Chef’d had more than 350 employees and a vast customer base. However, the financial problems it faced must have been severe since the folks behind the service decided against reentering the meal kit delivery market in the future.
A mere week after Chef’d closed its doors, the company’s assets were acquired by True Food Innovations, a Newport Beach investment company. Six months after the acquisition, the investment company announced that Chef’d meal kits would make a comeback, but this time, they would only be sold in retail stores. The kits have been reformulated to extend their shelf life to 55 days and shorten the prep and cook time to 15-20 minutes.
While we are sad that Chef’d as a meal kit delivery is no longer around, we are happy that its legacy lives on.
